Merkel Calls it Quits on Nuclear Energy

Germany will close all its nuclear energy plants by 2022, according to Al-Jazeera. It would appear the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in Japan made gave the Germans cold feet on nuclear power and Angela Merkel reversed her prior policy regarding nuclear power. What about the 22 percent of electricity in Germany that comes from nuclear energy? Well, according to German authorities, that will be addressed by increasing the amount of energy that comes from renewable resources, decreasing electricity consumption by 10 percent, and keeping a few of the nuclear plants cocked and loaded just in case.

What interests me is the assumption that electricity consumption can be reduced by 10 percent. It’s not impossible, mind you, just very difficult. Sure, there were protests against the use of nuclear energy but just wait until the people hit the streets to protest what will surely be skyrocketing electricity prices in the years ahead.
