Secretary of State Hillary Clinton let her hair down for a spell at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia. After getting a table at the Café Havana, Clinton and her entourage ordered a beer for each of themselves, some whiskey, and bottles of water, according to the Christian Post. She also partook in a little dancing, reportedly the rhumba.
Now that the images have been broadcast around the world, prudes everywhere are in their bathrooms leaning over the toilet literally dry heaving in their indignation. Few have so succinctly summarized that disfavor like British national and Heritage Foundation researcher Nile Gardiner who, in a blog post for the The Telegraph, stressed his appall and general feel that Mrs. Clinton’s actions were very naughty indeed.
“The overwhelmingly liberal US media is treating the story as a bit of fun, with the usually austere Mrs Clinton seen as letting her hair down. But I suspect that a lot of US taxpayers will see it differently – as a senior government official having a jolly time on an official overseas junket at taxpayers’ expense…. This was less an example of “smart power” than a boozy nightclub audition for the sixth season of Jersey Shore. Hillary Clinton’s Colombian antics are an embarrassment for a high-level cabinet member on official duty, and have lowered the office of Secretary of State.”
Sounds to me like Mr. Gardiner could a case of beer himself, as Republican strategist Dee Dee Benkie said so eloquently on Fox News after Gardiner had finished an interview with Stuart Varney.
“If anyone should have a drink [it’s someone] who has gone through what Hillary Clinton has gone through in your public and private life. She was First Lady, she was US Senator, she was almost the Democratic nominee for President and now she is Secretary of State– you know, I think she deserves a few beers. And I think Niles [sic] needs a case of beer. Because he needs to back off! Really, is he even an American? If he isn’t, he has no place to say anything.”
She makes a fair point. For my part, this only makes me adore Hillary more than I already do. Honestly, she has proven herself to be an extremely competent and diligent diplomat on America’s behalf and this is, quite frankly, a manufactured controversy by people hoping to score a few political points or, possibly, by people who still believe women shouldn’t drink beer. The photos are humanizing, showing that she’s capable of having a good time in addition to doing a killer job as Secretary of State.
