I know a man who in his motivational speeches often refers to the Bible using this mnemonic: “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.” Sure, it’s catchy, it’s bite-size, and it fits perfectly onto a PowerPoint slide for maximum efficiency. But, to put it bluntly, it is absolute and utter hogwash.
If some people do in fact believe the Bible really is nothing more than “basic instructions before leaving Earth,” I hope they’ve taken the time to consider the ramifications of that theology. At any rate, what inspired this post is an article I read at RELEVANT‘s website this morning. The author takes a hard look at what the word “biblical” really means and acknowledges–quite wisely–the limitations that come into play when people start trying read the Bible like an owner’s manual to the Christian life.
I suggest you give it a read.
